Why WAHM WorkSpace

Why is this SAHM starting a WAHM WorkSpace?

I’ve worked in service industries for most of my working adult life. I’ve been a travel agent, bar lady, hotel front desk staffer, personal concierge and an au pair/nanny. I’ve always loved being around people and interacting with others throughout my day.

My husband and I made the decision for me to stay home when my eldest was 18 months old. The job I was in at the time was costing more than I was making, especially on an emotional level, and the decision was made for me to stay home. It was lovely to be home with my boy all day! I did find that I really missed the interaction I had had when working.

When I was working I was a regular attendant at a variety of networking programs, and I had developed numerous relationships that had become more than just business relationships. Once I stopped working, these situations became few and far between. As much as I created a network of other moms with kids at home, it wasn’t quite the same. Talking about kids and family is lovely, but sometimes it’s nice to have a chance to talk about things other than those tied with being a mother.

A few months ago I was invited to join an online group for women entrepreneurs – Hello Boss Creative. At the first meet up I once again felt the joy of networking and how much it feeds my soul.

While I was a SAHM I had become very involved in the cloth nappy circles in KZN. One thing missing in Durban was a physical shop where potential Cloth Moms could see and feel a variety of nappies. I had started thinking of lots of ideas on how to make something like this happen.

I also became involved with Adventure Clubs – an app for parents to find organised activities to do with their kids. Kyle and I have done some really fun outings and have thoroughly enjoyed being involved. One thing that came up a few times was the need for a venue for certain activities in Durban.

In November 2016 we found out that I was pregnant again and we anticipated the birth! During my pregnancy I began to think more and more about the ideas of the venue and cloth nappy shop. I even came up with a name – Kids Kollective. It was while these thoughts were percolating in my pregnant brain, I went to an HBC Meet Up and decided to share my idea. As I talked with the women there, many of them moms, I realised that there may be more that might be needed.

Spending time networking with wonderful women has helped me to really find what I think is the perfect business for me at this time. So WAHM WorkSpace was born!

A venue where Work at Home Moms will have the opportunity to network, work in a professional environment, hold meetings and training sessions, market or shop a retail space for cloth nappies as well as other items that other WAHMs make, a multipurpose room to be used for various activities (including Adventure Clubs events), all with onsite child care available!

I can’t wait to get this venue open and operating! As I go through the steps of starting and building this business I will blog about the process.

Our family! The reason we do this.
